Solar flare disrupts flight communication
2012 Solar flare disrupts flight communication — and lights up night sky by David B. Nelson Jan 25, 2012 While 2012 prophets may interpret Sunday’s [January 22, 2012] massive solar flare activity as a sign of doomsday, scientists say not to worry, especially if you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. But airlines are still urged to exercise caution. The flare was classified as a M8.7 Coronal Mass Ejection, a moderate event despite being called the biggest and strongest activity … Continue reading

NASA spacecraft observes new characteristics of solar flares
A new assessment of solar flares by a team led by CU-Boulder indicates some are more powerful and last longer than scientists had previously thought, findings that have implications for mitigating damage by solar storms to navigation and communication systems on Earth. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which is carrying a suite of instruments including a $32 million University of Colorado Boulder package, has provided scientists with new information that energy from some solar flares is stronger and lasts longer than previously thought. Using SDO’s Extreme … Continue reading
Massive Solar Storm Could Cause Catastrophic Nuclear Threat in US
A severe solar storm could cause global chaos, wrecking satellite communications and would take down the most important power grids in the world for a period of years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts four “extreme” and many “severe” solar emissions which could threaten the planet during the current decade. Nasa has warned that a peak in the sun’s magnetic energy cycle and the number of sun spots or flares around 2013 could generate huge radiation levels. This is a special problem in … Continue reading

Nasa warns solar flares from ‘huge space storm’ will cause devastation
Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”, Nasa has warned. National power grids could overheat and air travel severely disrupted while electronic items, navigation devices and major satellites could stop working after the Sun reaches its maximum power in a few years. Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun … Continue reading
