THE QUESTION OF 2012!

December 21, 2012 is fast approaching, the end date of the Mayan Long Count calendar which started at Izapa on August 11, 3114 BCE when the sun was crossing the zenith there. What is the story with all this? The Mayans were obsessed with time and had many interconnecting calendars. The Long Count Calendar is one which stretches for 5,125 years — one quarter of a precessional cycle (at the current rate of precession). The sacred 260-day Tzolkin calendar is still being followed today, and it is woven into the Long Count which has been reconstructed. How this ancient culture acquired this knowledge and integrated it into its architecture and sacred teachings is an open question.

Does 21DEC2012 portend the End of the World, the gateway to a New Age, the Center of Time, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, or is it just another Comet Kahoutek story (for those old enought to remember that fizzle)?
